Chocolate Granita (Granita al Ciocolato)

« This recipe is easy to make without an ice cream maker or any other gadget – all you need is a source of cold. It comes directly from the land of gelatarias and the result is all about one taste – chocolate. »

Serves 4

  • 4 cups water
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 cup very good quality cocoa


  • Heat the water in a pan on low heat
  • Add the sugar and cocoa
  • Wait until the mixture is just beginning to boil
  • Stir without whisking for 2 minutes until the mixture is nice and even
  • Let it cool
  • Pour the mixture into a shallow dish and cover with plastic wrap
  • Put it into the freezer and let it set for 1 hour
  • Take the mixture out of the freezer and pass a fork through it to break up the ice crystals that have formed
  • Put it back in the freezer and repeat these steps 6 times (every 20 minutes)
  • Serve in a quenelle shape with a fresh mint leaf on top.
